Linda H. Bearinger, Ph.D., RN, FAAN

Vice-President North America

Linda is a Professor in the University of Minnesota's School of Nursing, and Director of the Center of Adolescent Nursing with joint appointments in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health. She has worked in adolescent health for over 30 years, in schools, clinics and public health settings. In her  work with vulnerable youth , she has provided services ranging from home visiting and school health to program development in numerous community settings.

Her research mirrors her practice emphasis. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, her research focuses on strategies for protecting vulnerable youth from potentially life-long problems associated with risky behaviors. 

Dr. Bearinger lectures and consults nationally and internationally on youth development and the translation of research to practice and policy. She has served on adolescent health expert panels for the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the National Institutes of Health and the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau (HRSA, DHHS).

Based on her leadership in the field of adolescent health, Dr. Bearinger was named the 2004 Adele Hoffman Visiting Research Professor in Adolescent Medicine and Health, the first nurse to ever receive this award in the history of the Society for Adolescent Medicine. She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, all of which focus on youth issues as well as articles on the training of health professionals for work with adolescents. The Center for Adolescent Nursing offers interdisciplinary masters, doctoral and post-doctoral study in public health with a focus on youth health.


Vinit Sharma

Vice-President Southeast Asia

Vinit graduated from R.N.T. Medical College, Udaipur. India in 1985 and gained his MD in Community Medicine/ Preventive & Social Medicine in 1988. He worked in Community Medicine/ Preventive & Social Medicine in Gujarat India, from 1989 to 1997 as professor and consultant in adolescent health. He then went on to work for the WHO and most recently he has been working for UNICEF, presently working as an Adviser (RH/ ARH) in CST in Amman, since December 2003. He was the recipient of the Swiss Association for Adolescent Health Award for outstanding research in the field of Adolescent Medicine, at the 6th International Conference on Adolescent Health, Vancouver (1995). He has done much research and been the recipient of other scholarships and awards.

He was co-opted to Council 2 years ago and now has been nominated for another 4 years.



Peter Watson

Vice-President Oceania

My name is Peter Watson and I have recently become the regional IAAH rep for the Oceania. I have been involved in the New Zealand Association of Adolescent Health and Development for the last 12 years or so including a term as President.

My Adolescent Health credentials in brief are: A vocational specialty in Paediatrics, with fellowship training in Adolescent Health in Sydney under Dr David Bennett. The last 10 years spent as a Senior Lecturer in Youth Health, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, University of Auckland where I have taught undergraduate and postgraduate youth health courses and undertaken research including Youth2000: New Zealand’s first national representative health and wellbeing survey of over 9,500 students that attend secondary school. In addition I have been the Head of the Centre for Youth Health,(a local, regional and national specialist youth health service in Auckland, New Zealand.

I am having a change - moving with my family to Christchurch (in New Zealand’s South Island) come January 2006. I look forward to a great lifestyle, more time with my family and continuing to work to improve the health and wellbeing of our youth.

Dr. Kim Scott-Fisher
Adolescent Health and Development Consultant
BSc. from University of Toronto, Canada in Human Biology and Psychology, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery , U.W.I, Jamaica (MBBS), Masters in Public Health (MPH), UWI, Jamaica

Worked in Private General Practice ,University clinic and Public Clinics including the Womens Centre of Jamaica for 3 years with a predominant youth clientelle.
Went on to do a Masters In Public Health (MPH) with an elective in the Bronx, New York focusing on Behavioural and Emotional Development in Adolescence.
Analysed the Jamaican data of the PAHO 1997 Caribbean Adolescent Health Survey . Wrote 3 papers: Adolescent Violence(2nd Author), Adolescent Suicide(2nd Author) and Adolescent Resiliency.(1st Author).Worked for 2 years with the Ministry of Health, Health Promotion and Protections Division advocating for and coordinating the National Adolescent Health Program . In 2002 began consulting with various agencies including the Academy for Educational Development in Washington D.C, Youth.Now /The Futures Group International, Pan American Health Organisation(PAHO), United Nations International Childrens Education Fund (UNICEF)and the Ministry of Health, Jamaica . During this period designed and conducted adolescent resiliency research and developed and implemented a resiliency based home visiting parenting program for 300 adolescents and their parents in rural Jamaica. Conducted a review of adolescent services for Jamaica including conducting urban and rural adolescent focus group discussions in preparation for the development of the 2004 National Adolescent Development Strategic Plan. Have conducted multiple training seminars including parents, coaches, pastors, peers, clinic staff training in adolescent risk and resiliency factors.

Currently doing a Jamaica National parenting education research review and review of best parenting program practices and working 2 days/week in school based health . In this capacity am developing and implementing a curriculum in Self, Emotional, Cognitive and Social Development for pre and young adolescents( age 8-12yrs) including offering counseling for these students and their parents in both a private and public school setting.

Have been involved in several mentorship programs through Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U) , young adolescent camps, sports and the United Church young adults and youth fellowship programs.

Member of the International Association of Adolescent Health(Iaah),the Society of Adolescent Medicine(SAM) and the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ)
